Death Toll Rises In Europe As Continent Is Ravaged By ‘The Most Devastating’ Flood In Decades

As the water level subsides, hundreds of people are confirmed to be missing in Western Europe while hundreds of others are already confirmed dead.

At least over 103 people have died in Germany as towns and villages are beginning to leave the grip of the floodwater, with about 1,300 still being found.

While holding a bilateral talk with American counterpart Joe Biden on Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking from Washinton, had expressed deep concerns about the “catastrophic” flood situation and sympathize with the victims. Making an address from the White House, Merkel described the devastating  water rage in these words; “characterized by fear, by despair, by suffering, and hundreds of thousands of people all of a sudden we’re faced with catastrophe.”

She says “My empathy and my heart go out to all of those who in this catastrophe lost their loved ones, or who are still worrying about the fate of people still missing.” She concluded that her government would not leave those affected “alone with their suffering,” adding that it was doing its “utmost to help them in their distress.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday that the widespread flooding is evidence of the need for urgency in acting on climate change. “It is the intensity and the length of the events that science tells us this is a clear indication of climate change and that this is something that really, really shows the urgency to act,” she said.

The flood which had destroyed power infrastructures and damaged communication lines while rivers burst their banks and taking over the cities and towns had chased people to taking refuge on taller buildings and roofs. Rescue operations had been facilitated by helicopters hovering in search of desperate victims.

Over 33 People have also lost their lives in neighboring Belgium with at least 10 houses swept away according to the Interior Ministry. People from more than 1000 homes have been moved to safer ground.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo had announced that Belgium will hold a national day of mourning for flood victims on Tuesday, saying the country stands “shoulder to shoulder” with one another.
“It will be a moment to reflect on the great human loss, it will also be a moment to show solidarity, to show closeness, to show solidarity, to show friendship,” De Croo said at a news conference. “What were meant to be beautiful summer days suddenly turned into dark and extremely sad days for a high number of our fellow citizens.”

As people are salvaging what they can from their leftover homes and belongings, Here is what a victim has said; “When I finished work at midnight I came back and parked in front of my home. There was no water, there was nothing under the load is going to happen. We had to live through COVID, We were hoping we’d get back on our feet, and now there’s this show I saw the floods in 1957 it was not as big as this. This is unheard of”

As Europe being very hit by the ravaging COVID 19 and is just recovering from the pandemic, it is now a tragedy overlapping as people try to take the pieces left out of destruction caused by the flood.

Over 150 rescue workers from France, Italy, and Austria are currently in Belgium “providing emergency assistance to people affected by the catastrophic floods,” the European Commission has said.
