CONSERVATORSHIP TUSSLE: Court Grants Britney Spears Right To Get A Lawyer Of Her Choice While She Accused Own Father Of Conservatorship Abuse

Britney Spears is potentially having a right to take control of her life once again after a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brent Penny granted her request to choose her own lawyer in a conservatorship right charge she’s fighting through law.

Spears who was in tears during her court hearing while speaking through phone had accused her own father of abusing her conservatorship arrangement of close to 13 years and wanted to choose her own attorney to help her bring the arrangement to an end. She said further that “I want to press charges against my father today,”

Under U.S. law, a conservatorship is the appointment of a guardian or a protector by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another person due to old age or physical or mental limitations. A person under conservatorship is referred to as a “conservatee”

Dated back as 2008, Britney Spears had been put under conservatorship when the world-renowned artist experienced a public breakdown and started exhibiting some erratic behaviors, such as shaving her head and attacking a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella, prompting her father Jamie to petition a court for an emergency “temporary” conservatorship, alluding to the fact that his daughter was unable to properly care and manage herself amid her mental health struggles. The singer was thereafter put under a psychiatric hospital for a mental health evaluation, and her father Jamie was later granted the legal right to oversee and make decisions regarding Britney’s finances, health, business deals, and personal life, which he managed up until 2019.

But on Wednesday, and based on the preceding month’s hearing, Judge Penny accepted the resignations of both Samuel D. Ingham, Britney’s father court-appointed lawyers in 2008, and Bessemer Trust, a wealth management firm and the court-appointed co-conservator of her estimated $60 million estates. Samuel D. Ingham had last week submitted his petition to resign after the singer criticized his representation.

Wasting no time, Britney Spears former federal prosecutor Matthew Rosengart, a veteran entertainment litigator, who was in court on behalf of spheres, and was retained by her, took up the new counsel role immediately and felt it was a big step in the interest of justice.

Calling into the court and speaking for about 20 minutes, and emotional Britney said she wants to get her father, Jamie Spears removed from the arrangement and charged with conservatorship abuse, saying “If this is not an abuse, I don’t know what it is”. She added, “I thought they were trying to kill me”. Her new lawyer, echoing some of her sentiments, pursuant to Britney Spears’s instructions, had said “we will be moving promptly and aggressively for his removal, the question remains why is he involved”, referring to Britney’s father. “He should step down voluntarily, as that is in the best interest of Britney Spears,” he said further.

The last time Spears spoke in court about three weeks ago, she railed against the conservatorship, calling it abusive, demoralizing, and embarrassing. She also claimed she was forced to perform, take medication, including birth control and get therapy.

However, Britney’s fans have intensified their calls to free Brittany from what they deemed a toxic situation while gathering outside the courthouse as news spread of Spear’s victory. Before the hearing, Spear gained some key support from her mother Lynn Spears who said in a court filing that Britney is able to care for herself and she is in a much different place than when the conservatorship began in 2008, even though her father maintains he had acted in the best interest of his daughter.

But critics of the arrangement have argued that if Brittany can work, then she can also handle her own affairs. In recent years, she has kept busy releasing several albums, headlining her Las Vegas residency, and serving as a reality competition judge all well under the conservatorship.
