Social Media Companies Must Open Offices In Russia – Putin

Published

on

This might be the unanticipated tough time for social media giants as more countries are now following the Nigerian model of compelling the BIG TECHS like Twitter and Facebook to become a domestic registered companies.
Countries that have stood on their grounds against these multibillion dollars companies in recent times include China, India, Canada, and now the more latest, Russia.
Reuters has reported on Thursday that President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that obliges foreign social media giants to open offices in Russia. According to a document just in circulation and signed by the government of Russia on Thursday, Moscow is taking a giant step to exert greater control over the Big Tech companies.
The Russian government in its determination to take total control of its space away from the control of influential countries, and through their social media companies is standing its ground to take control of its internet.
In the past, Kremlin has been opposed to the political use of foreign social media platforms to organize what they say are illegal protests and to publicize “politically-tinged” investigations into alleged corruption.
Part of the new law says “A foreign entity, carrying out activities on the internet in Russia, is obliged to create a branch, open an office or establish a Russian legal entity”.
Russia as a form of punishment has fined firms like Twitter for failing to delete content it says is illegal. And on Wednesday opened a new case against Alphabet (GOOGL.O) subsidiary Google for breaching personal data legislation.
Alexander Khinshtein, the head of the information policy and IT committee at the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, said “the law applied to internet giants with a daily audience in Russia of at least 500,000 people.
The firms must register a personal account on the website of Roskomnadzor, Russia’s state communications regulator”, he wrote on his Telegram channel. Companies that violate the legislation could face penalties such as advertising bans.
Russia has gone after social media companies that fail to delete content Moscow deems illegal quickly enough. Facebook (FB.O), Google, Telegram, and Twitter all have court hearings scheduled for later this month with new charges.
According to Reuters, the new law potentially affects 20 companies, including retailers and e-commerce companies.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian government versus Twitter face-off is still fresh after the bluebird blogging site deleted president Buhari’s tweets, claiming it “was in violation of the Twitter Rules”, prompting the Nigerian government to “indefinitely suspend” twitter altogether.
Just yesterday Thursday, the majority in the lower chamber of the Nigerian national assembly voted against lifting the Twitter ban.
