Why 19 Years Old Who Accused JAMB Of Altering His Result Is Now In Police Net

Chinedu Ifesinachi John, a 19-year-old candidate in the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), who accused the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB of altering his original score from 380 to 265 is now being handed over to the police in Abuja on offence of fraud.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Oloyede had accused the candidate of result tempering, adding that he would be handed over to the police for investigation and subsequently prosecuted. Oloyede said: “There was never any communication of 380 with this boy. Because this boy has accused JAMB, we are going to withhold his result until the investigation is concluded. We are going to request that our interactions with him be subjected to the public. As far as I am concerned, I am reporting you to the Inspector General of Police now except you tell me who helped you to commit this crime.”

It was a dramatic development when John who had claimed to have scored 380 in the examination conducted in June this year but was surprised to receive 265 from the board after the results were released, turned up at the examination body Abuja office On Friday, SEPT 3 to defend his claim alongside his lawyer an Enugu-based, Ikeazor Akaiwe and father John Ifenkpam having been invited by the examination board led by the register.

John’s lawyer, Ikeazor had written Jamb demanding N1 billion as damages and another opportunity for the 19 years old to retake the 2021 UTME exam. The lawyer said the N1 billion was to cover the physical and emotional trauma the boy had suffered from being offered “two separate scores from 2019 – 2021,” denying him the opportunity to study his desired course – medicine.

At closed crosscheck and after several inquiries in a closed session, however,  265 kept appearing as his score against the 380 he claimed he scored and the boy was given some minutes to “come clean” but he insisted. This prompted the Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede to tender documentary evidence by the board showing that John actually scored 265 and not the 380 he had claimed.

The Registrar said John was among 11 eleven other candidates who allegedly forged their results that the board would prosecute, said 2 are being prosecuted already.

He also said a team of security agents would visit Enugu to arrest members of a tutorial group the boy allegedly confessed to belonging to.

Ikeazor appealed to the board to give room for investigations.
